There are moments in history when escape feels essential, and 2025 is certainly one of them. Step through the incense-laden, smoky entrance of Theatre XIV in Bushwick, and you’ll find yourself in just such an escape—a mesmerizing slip down a rabbit hole into a world of glittering beauty and captivating mayhem. Queen of Hearts by Company XIV is a dazzling spectacle where opulence and enchantment collide. From the very first moment, the performers pour their hearts into every movement, every note, creating an unforgettable experience that I can’t recommend enough.
They not only astonish with their acts but also double up as cocktail waiters and barmaids, adding a unique interactive element that captivates the audience. The ensemble cast was talented and strikingly attractive, enhancing the show’s aesthetic appeal.
Standout performances came from the enchanting contortionist Lilin Lace and the acrobat-chanteuse Marcy Richardson, both of whom captivated the audience with their extraordinary talent and artistry. Madison Rose’s 11 o’clock number, “Off with Her Head,” was nothing short of stunning, showcasing her powerful vocals and commanding stage presence. Furthermore, one performer delivered a breathtaking balancing act, walking on champagne bottles in platform stilettos. She was the embodiment of finding balance in chaos, effortlessly blending skill and artistry in a way that left me in awe.
The production itself boasts an immersive atmosphere reminiscent of a chic Parisian cabaret, effectively transporting the audience to another time and place. The show leans more towards sensuality than outright eroticism, making it perfect for a diverse audience seeking entertainment infused with a hint of allure.
A whimsical moment unfolded midway through as a cake pop cake descended from above in an ethereally lit birdcage, presented on a small tray with a message reading, “Eat Me,” adding yet another layer of immersiveness and enchantment to the scene. The production’s meticulous attention to detail ensures a fully immersive experience, from the evocative lighting and innovative costume designs to the thoughtfully curated cocktail selection.
“Queen of Hearts” is truly a must-see for anyone in New York or visiting the city, and has a penchant for something different. Queen of Hearts by Company XIV offers a funny, trippy experience that caters to adults of all sexual orientations, ensuring that everyone feels included in the fun.
I found myself wanting to linger in the magical atmosphere long after the show concluded; you’ll likely find it hard to return to reality once it’s over. Especially the reality of 2025. The full experience justifies the ticket price, making it a theatrical pearl for New Yorkers and tourists alike.
This was my second production from Company XIV; I also attended their holiday show, Nutcracker Rouge, which delivered the same level of creativity, immersiveness, and performance. The main singer in that show was also amazing, showcasing the consistently high quality that Company XIV brings to their productions.
As I rate productions by how often I “Nod off” by giving “Nods”. This show gets “no nods” as its fast paced nature doesn’t allow for sleep. 😃
