THE DAY I BECAME BLACK: Interview with Bill Posley

THE DAY I BECAME BLACK is currently running at The SoHo Playhouse to great acclaim and is created, written and performed by Bill Posley (CBS’s “The Neighborhood,” Netflix’s “Glow”) and directed by Bente Engelstoft (“The Ellen DeGeneres Show”). The production blurb: "Bill Posley grew up biracial, happily identifying as both black and white. But at 10 years old he learns the world does in fact judge a book by its color, and even though he’s half white he’s labeled 100% black. Does a young comedian have to get rid of his whiteness to be the color people expect him to be?" I

Shareholder Value at Theater For the New City

SHAREHOLDER VALUE is a fast paced docu-style drama from playwright Tom Attea. Or it could be aptly  titled, "The Stockmarket Crash - for Dummies" or "A Change of Heart". We are placed right at the desk of a high powered CEO pre-, during and post the financial crisis of 2008. it's a hot seat. Financial jargon hurtles towards us like buckshot. We catch fragments, concepts and business speak in the heady atmosphere of the office of a titan of industry. Billions of dollars are made and lost in mere sentences. You feel the adrenaline, the fever, associated with transacting with vast

Hamlet at Grace Church

Director Sean Hagerty has crafted a sensational gift for you - a production of William Shakespeare's "Hamlet" that transports you to a sensorium of theatrical perfection. Part of the success of this work is that it takes place in the Grace Church in Jersey City (one stop on the Path train from Manhattan). The church setting creates a sense of grandeur, ritual and opulence. The sins of the characters seem more overt with God ever present in the stained glass windows and gothic arches. We become the congregation, the priest in the confessional, the court - we are complicit and

Twelfth Night At The Sheen Center Black Box Theater

Frog and Peach Theatre Company presents an accessible Twelfth Night stripped of any artifice or extraneous "concept" to deliver an enthusiastic romp through one of Shakespeare's most hilarious comedies. We have all of the ingredients for an attention grabbing show - mistaken identity, gender bender complexities, pranks, fools, bawdy drunkenness, witty repartee, plot twists, disguises and satisfying reveals - all culminating in marriages. This whirlwind is underscored by Ted Zurkowski's glorious, original music. It's a fast-paced hurtle through the text, almost as if the cast are on a revolve and swivel onto stage to drop their plot turn before being

The Neurology of the Soul -A.R.T./New York Jeffrey and Paula Gural Theatre

The Neurology of the Soul seeks to quantify the complexities of our passions. Can we measure the intensity of love? Its waxing and waning, its unpredictability, its mystery? This is a fascinating creative deep dive into neuroscience and it's application in 21st century marketing. What ultimately makes us 'tick'? Would our brains, under fMRI, scan reveal our deepest secrets to the scientist monitoring the experiment? Are we keeping secrets from ourselves? What happens to the 'experiment' when a third element/energy/force is added into the mix? How does the data change? This production makes you curious. It inspires a long list

SKIN – A Broken Box Mime Theater performance at A.R.T/New York

I did not know that I would love 90 minutes of traditional mime so much. But I did. Nine performers, in mime white make-up masks, performing a series of scenes and moments, managed to be both captivating and surprising, and I was amazed at how deeply I responded to this skilled and brilliantly executed performing art form. My vocabulary for mime is not very big. I immediately default to thinking about the man in the box, the rope puller, the mime mimic performing street theatre at a tourist intersection. SKIN takes that and tosses it out the moment the lights go

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde: at the Fringe Encore Series, Soho Playhouse

This is my favorite kind of theater –physical, inventive, ingenious and funny. Burt Grinstead and Anna Stromberg’s comedic adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, is theatrical catnip – you just can’t get enough of it. This multi-talented duo has written a sophisticated comic-tragedy, produced it and performed it – excelling in every area. It’s the kind of work I would also prescribe for all drama students to see as it is a prime example of performance skill, innovative design and clarity of directorial intention all rolled into one exceptional “fringe” performance. In a
